Mary,
I remember reading book about reincarnation back in the 80s, and in it, a woman who was a heavy smoker went under hypnosis to help her quit smoking. During the session, she unwittingly revealed that she had been accused of a being a witch (back in the day) and on the way to the wood pile, a kindly neighbor who had to be there told her to inhale the smoke so that she would die before the pain of the fire.

I just got chills when I read that. I have terrible allergies, but as a child I dreamt I smoked. And it came very naturally to me. Sometimes when I pick up a pen or unwrap a straw to stick in my drink, I feel like I'm holding a cigarette.

Don't know if you'll get this, but thought I'd share, because your poem struck me.

Ironically, Jet was named by my then 6 year old son because she was as 'fast as a jet." But, yeah, she's jet black too.
Some pennies are worth a lot of money, so you never know.

Jet, great name for a black cat! :) I'd forgotten about the heads up, heads down on pennies. I usually pick them up, but sometimes I'm tempted to pass them up. It's just a penny, then I think, imagine if all the pennies in the country were picked up, how much money that would be, and also, that message gets me, so if I leave it there, it feels like leaving something holy in the dirt.

Oh, and the superstition that probably most crosses my mind is when I find a penny---heads up is good, tails up is bad. Me? I pocket the penny anyway . . . .
and am reminded that it's a little blessing from the heavens to me because of the message written on it:
In God We Trust

Hi Anita, Glad to see you here. I think Friday the 13th is a great day and having a black cat myself, I guess I'd be out of luck if superstition held true. But I consider myself pretty lucky. So who knows, maybe Jet is my good luck cat. :-)
Seriously, you hit the nail on the head when you said people are always looking for answers -- reasons for the way things are. So if a chance coincidence happens, it seems to become the foundation upon which people base a belief, though the actual time and place of the occurrence is forgotten.

I haven't read Highland Hero, but your excerpt is wonderful --- and I love a good Highland hero. Good luck with your novel.

Thanks Judi! Glad you enjoyed the excerpt. I know lots of people who knock on wood. I think most of them to it out of habit, rather than for superstitious reasons.

Mary, if the mirror one happens to be true, I'm in a dangerous place :) I just adore mirrors.

Priscilla, I'm not superstitious at all, but I'm always aware. If a black cat crossed in front of my car, I smile to myself.
